News on Cathy Henderson's execution...

from the Texas Moratorium Network Blog

News directly from George Cumming, one of Cathy's lawyers:

Judge Wisser [has advised] us that he will vacate the April 18 execution date, and reschedule the date to June 13, 2007. Maybe we are turning the corner in this case, at long last. We still have a long way to go, but at least now have some time to get there.

And here's the email from Judge Wisser:

Dear Counsel:
I have reread the motions and memos submitted to the court. I seriously considered both parties positions over the weekend. I decided, although not convinced of the legal correctness of the defendant's position; it is in the interest of justice and the criminal justice system of this state, that the execution date of April 18th be reset for June 13th, 2007. This should permit the defense adequate time to perfect any subsequent writ.

Therefore I will instruct my clerk to recall the current death warrant and to issue a new one with the June 13th date.

Sincerely,

Jon Wisser
Judge Presiding

Social Justice Defined

Nice blog site McVulgar.

Hey, since we had a question at our last meeting regarding how "social justice" is defined, let's explore that some . . . My (progressive) sense is that "social justice" imagines and pursues an alternative vision of reality where all people are valued. It envisions a reality where one receives not only "according to her/his contribution" (since not all people are able to contribute, and anyway, the value of one's contribution is subjective, determined by 'market values' and those in power), but social justice also advances” to each according to his/her needs." Social justice, then, seeks not just individual responsibility and contribution, but corporate responsibility and contribution to the collective well-being of society. It confronts the "systems of sin," the "powers and principalities," that result in the monopolization of wealth, gross income disparities, militarism, systemic racism, poverty, and every other social ill that diminishes opportunity, creativity, and the pursuit of happiness.

Another Execution

Today Roy Lee Pippin was killed by the State of Texas. He was the 11th person killed by the State of Texas this year. Texas leads the nation in State sponsored killing with 389. Virginia follows with a close 98, then Oklahoma with 84. All of these figures are State sponsored killing from 1976 to March 29, 2007. Since 1976 1,068 people have been killed by State sponsored means. More than a third of the national total of State sponsored killing has transpired in Texas.

Please continue to pray with us for those killed by the State and the victims that were involved in the crimes committed and all of their families. We seek reconciliation, peace, and love. We seek to love one another as we love ourselves.

Our mission and hope for the world

Our mission, in its broadest sense, includes increasing awareness of and dialogue related to social and ecological justice issues. The group will focus its attention on specific topics that are timely, relevant and of greatest concern to the community.

Current concerns include the following:

- Training in the ministry of difficult topic facilitation
- Inclusion of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) persons in worship
- Ordination of openly LGBT persons
- Use of inclusive language
- Struggle of women in the church
- Involvement of the church in the areas of environment and social justice
- Support for individuals in the APTS community who are sensitive to social justice concerns

At the heart of Christian Social Justice is the commandment to Love Your Neighbor as Yourself. Jesus embodied this commandment by loving everyone he came across and he continues to embody it through the Church. The Gospels show Christ' heart moved by those who have been pushed to the margins of society: the sick, the poor, and the rejected. Christ in all his Glory reached out to share this glory with the cast down of the world. We believe each of us is called to share what we have with those who have not, everything from money to our social position. We must recognize ourselves in others, our liberation in the liberation of others. The mission of Corpus Christi is to learn to articulate this Good News of Christ. So that we can proclaim it with confidence, love, and hope for unity of the Body of Christ.
